Making a comeback: Brown furniture

September 04, 2019 2 min read

Here at Maison Margot we favour vibrant colours and enticing interiors. We also have a lot of love for antique furniture and we have plenty of it in our own homes. Beautiful, brown furniture. And at last it looks like it might be making a comeback after having been dropped over the last decade for lighter, cleaner shades and minimalist neutrals. What better example than this beautiful baroque commode with gold ormolu handles standing in front of The Swan Dark wallpaper:

Furniture - Making a comeback: Brown furniture

You can easily recreate this look at home. You could follow the style of the Arts and Crafts movement and its decorative design - think William Morris; or Art Nouveau with its beautiful flowing lines that was championed by Liberty's in the 1920s. Or you could go back even further. Either way, these styles make a strong impact on the look and feel of your room and the best bit: they contrast perfectly with strong colours. Even if you don’t fancy going all out with wallpaper, you could pair beautiful velvet fabrics with this style of interior. Velvet is still going strong and we have plenty of velvet cushions that would fit the bill perfectly. Our beautiful silk leopard cushions from British designer Katie Victoria Brown exude luxury - featuring exotic botanicals and a leopard printed on quality silk with velvet backing. Very modern furniture also blends well with a fine antique piece - so don’t be afraid to mix it up!

You could also make an impact with matching interiors. For example, our beautiful Lakai wallpaper was influenced by Central Asia and the Asian Steppes. With its matching linen fabric and cushions, there would be no punchier way to create something special. Check out our whole range of mix and match products from Mind the Gap - wallpapers, fabrics, lighting and cushions galore.

You could also bring some more bold colours into the room by adding one of our handwoven Peruvian Rugs.

There are so many options out there so don’t be afraid to mix and match. We think antiques should be a part of everyone’s home, they are steeped in history and bring so much character to an interior. Why not go and check out an antiques shop or fair near you. Antiques are plentiful. And at keen prices and varying styles, you are bound to bag yourself an excellent deal.
